US sanctions Russia-linked intel group over Moldova ‘destabilization campaign’

Tehran, IRNA – The United States on Monday announced sanctions on a Russian intelligence-linked group for its role in what Washington has described as the Russian government’s “destabilization campaign and continued malign influence campaigns in Moldova.”

The sanctions target seven leading members of the group, including its leader Konstantin Prokopyevich Sapozhnikov, according to a Reuters report citing the US Treasury Department.

Those blacklisted are accused of trying to destabilize Moldova’s government through protests in the country’s capital in February 2023. At the time, Moldova accused Russia of fomenting unrest on its soil, which was denied by Moscow.

The newly-announced sanctions are the latest in hundreds of anti-Russia measures by the US over the past months, with those measures mainly targeting Russia over its war with Ukraine.

The Kremlin has time and again denounced the US measures, part of which have targeted Russia’s energy sector, and accused the US of taking unfair action to pursue its own goals.
