President Raisi’s trip to Latin America on agenda: Envoy

Tehran, IRNA – Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi will go on a Latin American tour in the near future, but the exact date is still not fixed, according to Iran’s ambassador to Venezuela.

“There have been talks about the president’s visit, but the exact date of his trip will be set by the relevant authorities at the right time,” Hojatollah Soltani told IRNA.

He said that when visiting Latin America, Iranian presidents usually visit two or three countries given the long distance between Iran and Latin America.

However, Soltani added that the destinations of President Raisi’s visit will be determined by the presidential office and the Foreign Ministry.

He also pointed to Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian’s recent trip to Venezuela, saying “good agreements” were reached between Tehran and Caracas during his “very successful” visit to Latin America.

“In the last two years, our communications with Venezuela have increased considerably,” he said.

Back in February, Amirabdollahian embarked on a tour to Latin American countries, including Venezuela, where he met Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro and other top officials to discuss expansion of bilateral ties.

** Fake news targeting Iran-Venezuela ties

Elsewhere in his remarks, Soltani dismissed fake reports targeting Iran-Venezuela ties, including a Bloomberg report claiming that Venezuela had handed nine tons of gold to Iran as payment for Iran’s assistance in reviving Venezuela’s gasoline refineries.

As you also mentioned, Bloomberg itself has stated that the report had not been confirmed. Unfortunately, there have been so many of such things in the past, which mostly create scenarios and tell stories based on a series of conjectures, regarding Iran-Venezuela relations, the envoy said.

“One time, we opened a bicycle factory in Venezuela, and the American media declared that Iran was enriching uranium in this factory and wanted to carry out nuclear activities,” he recalled.

The remarks come as Iran and Venezuela signed new agreements to boost bilateral cooperation in the fields of the development of oil and gas fields, renovation of refineries and petrochemical complexes, and oil trade.

During a visit to Caracas, Iranian Oil Minister Javad Owji and Venezuela’s First Vice President Delcy Rodriguez signed a host of cooperation documents, which include renovation and reconstruction of Venezuela’s oil refineries by Iran to maximize the capacity of those complexes.
