Ex-Qatari PM warns against military provocation in Persian Gulf

Tehran, IRNA – Former Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, known as HBJ, has warned against any military provocation in the Persian Gulf which he believes would bring dire economic, political and social consequences for the region.

In a tweet posted late on Saturday, HBJ said that the situation in the Persian Gulf region is dangerous and requires everybody to constantly watch for any potential incident that could cause insecurity in the region.

He said that Western governments, led by the United States, have yet to reach an agreement with Iran to revive a 2015 deal on the country’s nuclear program.

On the other hand, Sheikh Hamad said, that Israel is actively seeking to obtain weapons and equipment that could enable it to attack Iranian targets in the region, adding, however, that the US is still reluctant to deliver such weapons to Israel.

If the Iran nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), is not revived and the US supplies Israel with the weapons it wants, a military provocation might ensue which could destabilize the Persian Gulf and would have dire economic, political and social repercussions for the region, he warned.

HBJ expressed hope that the Persian Gulf countries could use all of their capacities to warn the West, especially the US, about the threat that could be posed by any escalation in the region.

He said he had been very optimistic about the possibility of an agreement between the West and Iran on the JCPOA, adding, however, that the optimism has diminished in recent months.

The former Qatari PM said that he does not rule out a potential revival of the Iranian nuclear deal, adding that such a development would save the region from bitter consequences that could be caused by a failure of the process to revive the deal.
