Iran FM: Ties with Syria ‘in their best status’

Tehran, IRNA – Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian on Saturday said that Iran-Syria relations “are in their best status”, with officials of both countries intending to promote bilateral economic and trade relations to the level of political ties.

He made the comments in a joint press conference with Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad following meetings with the top Syrian diplomat and President Bashar al-Assad in the capital Damascus.

The Iranian foreign minister said that Tehran and Damascus are now implementing agreements they have previously signed, announcing that he and his Syrian counterpart have also agreed to extend a long-term cooperation agreement which “will be signed in the near future".

Amirabdollahian stressed that cooperation between the two countries will continue in all fields, especially energy, saying that talks were held on the construction of a thermal power plant in Syria.

The top Iranian diplomat briefed reporters on his talks with the Syrian president as well.

Amirabdollahian said that President Assad has invited his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim Raisi to visit Syria, adding “I will put my effort into making this trip happen".

“In the meeting with the Syrian president, we evaluated bilateral, as well as key regional and international issues, on which the two sides shared similar views,” Amirabdollahian said.

The Iranian foreign minister further said that national sovereignty and integrity of countries should be respected, adding that Iran will continue its diplomatic efforts to help resolve disputes between Syria and Turkey.

Amirabdollahian said that Iran already intervened “when it felt that a Turkish attack on northern Syria was possible”, expressing satisfaction that Tehran’s contacts with Ankara and Damascus led to talks between them.

The Syrian foreign minister also spoke with reporters. He thanked Iran for its support to Syria, saying that the two sides intend to expand their economic and trade relations in an effort to counter Western sanctions.
