Iran main player in Vienna talks

Tehran, IRNA - The seventh round of negotiations in Vienna, Austria, on revival of the 2015 nuclear deal and removal of anti-Iran sanctions continues in an atmosphere that the Iranian negotiators play the role of a major actor, who is persuading the astounded Western sides to respond.

Iran Newspaper published a memo written by Mostafa Khoshcheshm, an expert in international affairs, on Saturday, who wrote:

This round of Vienna talks, the seventh round of talks between Iran and the P4+1 group (Britain, France, Russia, China plus Germany), kicked off amid a change of expectations and viewpoints thanks to shift of power in Tehran, where a new administration came to power and tried to reduce the negative impact of sanctions on Iran's economy; therefore, the Iranian negotiating team is not under pressure and they can insist on Iran's legitimate demands and rights when it comes to nuclear-sanction talks with the Westerners.

As a result, the Iranian negotiating team headed by Ali Bagheri Kani succeeded in astonishing the Western side and have an upper say when it comes to returning to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and lifting anti-Iran sanctions.

The Iranians submitted two draft texts, which were different from the draft of the sixth round of the Vienna talks. The new Iranian negotiators changed some parts of the previous draft and added new propositions. Of course, it was already known that the West would resist to accept the new drafts, but they have been convinced that the Iranians' demands should be included in the final text.

The West is expected to use all its leverages to put pressure on Iran and propagate against the Islamic Republic in a bid to get in the way of Iranians achieving their demands.

The Western powers, including Britain, France, and Germany, triggered by the United States, may try to play good cop/bad cop game and pursue negotiations on and off, but it is the Iranian team that is determined to maintain positive trend to push forward the Vienna talks.

Concurrent with the talks, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Iran reached a consensus over international supervision on Iranian nuclear sites, which helped enhance the Islamic Republic's stance in the nuclear negotiations in Austrian capital.

Another achievement of the mentioned consensus is that Russia and China showed more determination in supporting the Iranian demands during the negotiations.

So, it is expected that IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stops adopting biased and excessive demands, which put pressure merely on Iran to abide by its commitments under the JCPOA and neglecting other parties.
