Iran Pres: New chapter started in Tehran-Dushanbe ties

Tehran, IRNA – Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has highlighted cultural, economic, and political capacities in Tehran and Dushanbe and said that a new chapter has started in bilateral ties.

President Raisi made the remarks in a meeting held in Tehran on Tuesday evening with Tajik Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin.

In the meeting, the president said during his recent visit to Tajikistan, a new chapter started in bilateral relations, and the two should take the opportunity for serving the nations' interests.

The two countries should also make use of the existing capacities to deepen cooperation, the president stressed.

Referring to the importance of cooperation between the regional countries, Iran and Tajikistan in particular, in bringing about peace and stability to Afghanistan, the president said that formation of an inclusive government consisting of all political and ethnic groups will help achieve the end.

Afghanistan needs an inclusive government to guarantee its security and halt bloodshed and fratricide, he added.

The second foreign ministerial meeting of neighbors of Afghanistan plus Russia will be held in Tehran today.

About the meeting, the spokesman for Iranian Foreign Ministry Saeed Khatibzadeh said in his weekly press conference on Tuesday that the meeting will be held with participation of foreign ministers of six neighbors to Afghanistan. The Uzbek, Tajik, Turkmen, and Pakistani foreign ministers will take part in person while the Chinese and Russian foreign ministers will attend the meeting online; meanwhile, representatives from Beijing and Moscow will be present in the meeting.

As the Iranian president noted, terrorist events in Afghanistan hurt the feeling of humans and the United States has undoubtedly a hand in those events.

He went on to say that the US does not want to see Afghan people enjoy tranquility and security.

For his part, the Tajik foreign minister said that the recent travel of Iranian president to Dushanbe was a new chapter in bilateral relations.

He noted that his country is determined to upgrade the current level of cooperation with Iran.

Muhriddin also stressed the need to finalize implementation of mutual agreements.

At his remarks, the Tajik foreign minister referred to permanent membership of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and said that such an accession will help ensure regional peace.

Iran became a permanent member of the Organization in the SCO meeting in September.
