Russia dispatched two warships to Iran in order to participate in the 2021 International Army Games.
Russia’s Southern Military District announced in a statement on Friday that the crews of Makhachkala and Astrakhan artillery ships of the Caspian Flotilla had left their base in the Republic of Dagestan and were sailing towards Bandar Anzali in northern Iran. Makhachkala is the main representative of the Russian navy in the competition while Astrakhan will be a reserve ship.
The sixth round of the Sea Cup competition of the 2021 International Army Games, a maritime training among crews of surface ships, is going to be held from August 25 to September 4 at the naval base of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the Caspian Sea.
The Anzali Port hosts ships from Azerbaijan Republic, Kazakhstan and Russia with about 400 personnel.
The competition is slated to be held in two stages at sea and on the beach. The Islamic Republic's port of Anzali will host resilience competitions and southeastern port of Chabahar will host diving contests.
Two Kazakh vessels entered Iranian waters on Monday morning as the first vessels to participate in the Sea Cup contests.
On August 9, Azerbaijani Defense Minister Colonel General Zakir Hasanov visited his country’s naval forces to inspect the readiness of the team participating in the Iranian “Sea Cup” competition.
