Pakistan keen on launching sea route with Iran

Islamabad, Sept 29, IRNA - Pakistan’s Minister of Maritime Affairs Syed Ali Haider Zaidi has stressed upon the need to launch sea route with Iran to further enhance cooperation with the Islamic Republic in communication sector.

He expressed the desire during a meeting with Ambassador of Iran to Pakistan Mehdi Honardoost who called on him at his office in Islamabad.

Both sides on the occasion discussed ways to expand their bilateral cooperation in maritime affairs.

Minister Syed Ali Haider Zaidi expressing his views said that Pakistan is eager to establish passenger shipping line between the ports of Iran and Pakistan to expand bilateral trade ties.

He was confident to start the passenger shipping service during his tenure as the minister.

Ambassador Honardoost during the meeting talked about immense potential of cooperation between Gwadar port of Pakistan and Chabahar port of Iran.

He said the two ports can help to strengthen bilateral economic and trade cooperation between Iran and Pakistan.

He called for implementation of MoUs signed between the two countries to enhance cooperation between Chabahar and Gwadar ports.

Iranian envoy added the Pakistani investors and traders should get full advantage of Chabahar free trade zone.

Chabahar port can help promoting ties between Iran and Pakistan in tourism and economic sectors. Every year more than 200,000 Pakistani pilgrims travel to holy places in Iran and Iraq via Iran.

Given the long distances on land as well as limited number of direct flights between Iran and Pakistan, sea line between the two countries could offer excellent facilities to passengers of the two sides.

Earlier Ian's Minister for Road and Urban Development Abbas Akhundi and the then Pakistani Minister for Ports and Shipping Mir Hasil Khan Bizenjo had agreed on starting ferry service from Pakistani port city of Karachi to the Iranian port city of Chabahar.
