Commander: Navy’s most important problem maintaining Bab al-Mandab security

Tehran, Feb 12, IRNA – Navy Commander Brigadier General Habibollah Sayyari underlined the most important problem of the Navy is restoring security in the Gulf of Aden, the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait.

“The Iranian naval forces have escorted a total of 3,850 Iranian cargo and oil tanker vessels as well as 25 foreign ships in Bab al-Mandab and Gulf of Aden,” Sayyari said on Sunday, addressing a gathering of senior naval commanders in Tehran.

“Several destroyers of the Iranian Navy, including Alvand destroyer, Bushehr logistic vessel are currently present in the Gulf of Aden,” he added.

Brigadier General Sayyari said that for the first time the Iranian Navy has managed to encircle the Cape of the Good Hope for the first time which is a record in itself.

“The gathering of Navy commanders of the Indian Ocean Rim countries will be hosted by Iranian Navy and countries from Europe will take part as an observer member,” he added.
