Greece FM: Daesh should be regarded as main enemy

Tehran, Nov 29, IRNA – Greece Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias said on Sunday that the incident for Russian fighter should not have been occurred and the real enemy should be regarded as Daesh terrorist group.

Neither Turkey nor Russia should be regarded as enemies, he said in a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif.

Relations between Iran and Greece dated back to thousand years ago and other countries which lack such record of activities cannot understand it, he said.

Welcoming nuclear deal between Iran and G5+1, he said the deal could pave the path to resolve problems and any side who fails to implement it will be the loser.

Iran is a type of country which remains committed to its pledges but there is no doubt that other parties will do the same, he said.

Iran plays a very significant role in resolving Syrian crisis, said Greece foreign minister, adding that Greek has a very deeply rooted ties with Syria and Syria is a country home to various religious and cultural groups but regretfully millions of its residents have been displaced.

Countries such as Greece pay the price for the decision made by the third countries, he said.

Greek is now bridging the gap between the Middle East and European Union, he said, adding that some members of European Union cannot understand what is now going in the Middle East but Greek understands the way of thinking in that region.

Although Greek is now regarded as cultural center for the European Union, but it considers itself as part of the Middle East region and can meddle in its disputes, said Greece foreign minister.

Referring to economic, cultural and political cooperation with Tehran, he said his country is hopeful to implement all these affairs in a defined program.

On the problems created for Iranian displaced people stationed at Greek borders, he said countries in the region were to pursue decisions made by the European Union and close their borders on nationals other than Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Athens tries to remove the humanitarian needs of such people while the problems which had already created at Greek borders were removed last night, he said.

This is a historical phenomenon that no one can stop these refugees, he said.

On regional developments, he said Daesh is a potential threat which not only threatens EU foreign policy but it will also threaten EU interior policy.

'In 2015 I had warned my colleagues on upcoming events in Libya and Syria but they expressed surprised over my views but mainly focused on problems in north-east of Europe,' he said.

Turkish military fighters have violated Greece air space about 1,500 times and if we wanted to show the same reaction that Turkey did with Russian plane, you can assume what has happened now, he said.

Greek is now at the center of a destabilized triangle (Ukraine-Syria-Libya), he said, adding that Athens is to meddle to resolve these crisis and disputes and Greece is a good partner for those seeking to resolve issues through political means, he said.

He said that the Greek prime minister is to pay a visit to Tehran in the first half of 2016, and expressed the hope that the already signed MoUs between the two countries to be implemented as soon as possible.

As Iran is very rich in oil and gas reservoir, Greek shipping lines are very active and the grounds for mutual cooperation to this end is well prepared, said Greek foreign minister.
