According to the Supreme Leader's Office, the appointment was made through a decree issued by the Supreme Leader.
Saeed Jalili was former secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC).
Meanwhile in a separatge decree, Ayatollah Khamenei appointed Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani as his representative to the SNSC for a three-year term.
Earlier this week, Shamkhani was appointed as the SNSC's secretary by President Hassan Rohani.
