President critical of unauthorized US air strikes on Syria

Tehran, Sept 23, IRNA – President Hassan Rouhani on Tuesday criticized the US for violating international law by air raids on Syria in absence of the UN Security Council authorization.

President Rouhani, who was speaking for a group of US media managers on the sidelines of his New York visit for the annual UN General Assembly meeting, said that bombardment of a country requires either the approval of the UN Security Council or an official request by the Syrian government for the military support. Rouhani reiterated that bombardment of a country by another country or several countries or even by a coalition, without the legal authorization is meaningless and could be considered as incursion.

"Isn't it ironic that the United States says it wants to fight with a terrorist group in Syria, while it creates terrorists and armed groups against the legitimate government of that country?" Rouhani asked.

He noted that restoring stability in Syria is impossible without the contribution of the central government, even if there are some objections to the performance of the government.
