According to Japanese media reports, Kamikawa announced in a statement that her country has resumed financial assistance to UNRWA, saying the agency’s role in dealing with the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip cannot be ignored.
The Japanese foreign minister earlier met with UNRWA head Philip Lazzarini in Tokyo and discussed ways the agency can increase its transparency and oversight, including ensuring the ability to track budgets and impartiality of its staff.
Tokyo’s move by followed a similar step by countries such as Canada, Australia, Sweden and Finland, which had temporarily suspended their financial support for UNRWA over unfounded Israeli allegation.
The Zionist regime came up with a narrative in January that accused 12 of the 13,000 UNRWA members of participating in the Al-Aqsa Storm operation that prompted the regime’s backers including the United States to terminate aid to this humanitarian institution.
Lazzarini has constantly been requesting donor countries to review their decision while warning about the exhaustion of resources of this human rights organization.
I hope that more countries will resume the UNRWA aid to help the people of Gaza, he recently said.
