Scientific nationalism an obstacle to uphold human rights: Iran

Tehran, IRNA – Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva has said that scientific nationalism is an obstacle to uphold human rights as it could restrict the sharing of science, technology and innovation.

“Scientific nationalism, unilateral coercive measures, and monopoly of intellectual property can restrict the sharing of science, technology and innovation, which could create more significant obstacles to uphold human rights”, said Ali Bahreini, who is also the head of the Social Forum of the Human Rights Council (HRC).

He made the comments on Thursday as he presented a report on the 2023 meeting of the Social Forum to the 55th HRC session.

Bahreini also said that participants at the 2023 Social Forum meeting underlined that access to the advantages of scientific breakthroughs and applying them are among fundamental human rights.
According to the Iranian representative, the participants also urged governments to remove obstacles in the way of upgrading digital literacy and preserve the right to access commodities and digital services at the global level.
