The ICJ said in a statement on Friday that the situation in Rafah “demands immediate and effective implementation of the provisional measures indicated by the court in its order of 26 January 2024”, in which the court ordered Israel to take all steps within its power to ensure genocidal acts are not being committed in its war on Gaza.
“The court notes that the most recent developments in the Gaza Strip, and Rafah in particular, ‘would exponentially increase what is already a humanitarian nightmare with untold regional consequences’, as stated by the United Nations Secretary-General,” the ICJ said.
According to Shehab news agency, Hamas said in reaction, “We welcome the decision of the International Court of Justice on January 26 regarding the necessity of immediate implementation of temporary measures and the full responsibility of the occupying regime to maintain the security of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.”
“We ask the court to turn its decision into a direct and clear order to stop this brutal aggression that has led to genocide against defenseless civilians in the Gaza Strip,” it added.
The resistance movement further noted that since the January 26 order, more than 2,700 Palestinians have been martyred by the Zionist army’s killing machine, adding that it shows that the occupying entity does not care about the international justice system.
Hamas also asked the UN Security Council to accept its responsibility for what is happening in Gaza and make the ICJ order applicable to the Zionist regime in order to prevent the further spread of human catastrophe in the city of Rafah.
