Tehran helps stop deterioration of Baku Sept attack: Armenian official

Tehran, IRNA – The Armenian deputy foreign minister has announced that Iran’s measures led to preventing “further deterioration” of Azerbaijan’s last September attack.

“Iranian actions and statements helped to stop a further deterioration of that situation,” Vardan Voskanyan told the Washington-based news website of Al-Monitor in an interview released on January 31, 2023.

As the Armenian official underlined, “Iran is an important partner."

“The border with Iran is of utmost importance to us. We have two closed borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan, thus Iran and Georgia are our only gates to the outside world.”

During the interview, Voskanyan elaborated on Azerbaijan’s three objectives behind its measures, namely ”the ethnic cleansing of Nagorno-Karabakh, to provoke large-scale military tension in the region and finally to push the Armenian side to give an extra-territorial corridor.”

In his remarks, the Armenian official pointed to the September attack which refers to the 12th day of the month in 2022 when forces of Yerevan and Baku were involved in a conflict and the two sides accused the other of violating their territorial integrity.
