Europe cannot squeeze new concession via sanctions: Iran MP

Tehran, IRNA – Europe cannot resort to the imposition of new sanctions on Iran in a bid to squeeze new concessions from the Islamic Republic, an Iranian legislator said.

Abolfazl Amouei told IRNA on Wednesday if Europe dreams of squeezing new concessions from the Islamic Republic by resorting to such a sanction policy, it is quite clear that they do not know Iran precisely.

The lawmaker, who is representing Tehran in the Iranian Parliament, noted that fresh European sanctions on certain Iranian officials and entities would destroy the infrastructure of bilateral ties between Iran and Europe and that the Islamic Republic will react seriously and effectively in the face of the recent embargo.

The new sanctions would not be effective because the Iranian authorities do not have any assets in Europe to be sanctioned, but the Europeans’ behavior will create negative sentiments towards them, he warned.

The spokesperson of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of Parliament went on to say that the issue of the death of Iranian woman Mahsa Amini and the following protests are completely internal affairs, so the Western states are not entitled to intervene in such issues.

The European Union imposed sanctions on 11 Iranian officials and four entities, which entails bans on issuing visas and freezing the assets of these individuals.

The so-called human rights sanctions on Iran have targeted 97 individuals and eight entities so far.

Amouei emphasized that the Iranian authorities have reviewed the issue of the death of Mahsa Amini and that the administration, parliament as well as medical and police entities published reports in this respect.

As to Europeans’ compliance to their commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal, the Iranian MP noted that European powers did not play a constructive role during the talks in Vienna, Austria, to revive the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and lift anti-Iran sanctions.
