Iranian minister says US sanctions caused huge fatalities in global health sector

Tehran, IRNA – Iranian Minister of Health Bahram Einollahi on Friday slammed the US sanctions against independent countries and said that Washington’s unilateral sanctions on banking and financial sectors of other countries have caused huge fatalities in the area of global health.

The Iranian minister made the remarks during the 75th World Health Assembly.

I agree with the director-general of the World Health Organization that peace is a precondition for health, Einollahi said, adding that when a war occurs, it is followed by hunger and diseases.

Wars are not just fought with guns and bullets; the economic and financial wars inflict much more damage to the health of the people, he said.

Noting that the global outbreak of the COVID-19 showed the vulnerability of health systems in global urgencies, the minister said that the pandemic and its consequent challenges are a threat not only to health but also to peace and security.

He called on WHO to play its role in facilitating a fair access to vaccines, their domestic production, and regional self-sufficiency in this regard.
