Amirabdollahian and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell met on Tuesday evening (local time) on the sidelines of the 76th United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Iranian Foreign Minister said that the new administration in Iran was reviewing the history of the talks to revive the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), informally known as the Iran nuclear deal, and would resume the talks previously ongoing in Vienna, Austria.
Iran wouldn’t be wasting the country’s time in talks, nor would it accept counter-productive treatment by the US, the top diplomat stressed, criticizing policies of the US President Joe Biden’s administration on Iran and the nuclear deal.
He also criticized European participants of the deal for urging Iran to rush for negotiations to revive the JCPOA, instead of pressuring the US to stop violating the deal.
All parties must know that Iran seeks tangible outcome, so that it can see removal of US sanction in practice, Amirabdollahian stressed, adding that it is not acceptable that the US speaks positively, but hits new sanctions against Iran on the other hand.
Also in the meeting, EU foreign policy chief said that the JCPOA was important not only for Iran and 4+1 but also for the region and the world, adding that its failure would be good for no party.
The EU has always been critical of former US President Donald Trump’s malign policy and action in exiting the nuclear deal, but the new US administration has opened a new session in preserving and reviving the deal, Borrell said.
He went on to elaborate that the US responsibility in creating the current situation was clear, but all parties should help reach a mutually accepted result and the first step to do so is to set a time for a meeting in Vienna.
Amirabdollahian and Borrell also discussed the situation in Afghanistan and potential cooperation especially on the refugees and the necessity of forming an inclusive government.
