Decline of water level surges dredging operation in Caspian Sea

Tehran, IRNA – The dredging operation in ports of northern Iran has increased by 13% per year because of the decrease in the Caspian Sea water level, and long-term and short-term measures have been initiated to secure the existing structures in the sea, an official has said.

The CEO of Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) Ali-Akbar Safaei said that a study was started several months ago to consider plausible conditions based on the circumstances of the sea.

There are three scenarios to preserve aquatic structures of the Caspian Sea by using measures such as dredging, strengthening marine structures, or accessing deeper areas of the sea for constructing new structures, he noted.

The Iranian Space Agency warned that satellite imagery shows the water levels of the Caspian Sea are decreasing.

The Islamic Republic’s concerns have been raised by the minister of roads and urban development during talks with the relevant Russian minister as well as the deputy prime minister, Safaei said, adding that Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has placed the decrease in the Caspian Sea water level on the agenda as a serious subject for negotiations with Russia.
