Tehran, IRNA - The senior advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran on special political affairs met with Syrian President Bashar Assad during a trip to Syria and discussed various issues, especially bilateral relations.

Syrian President Bashar Assad hosted "Ali Asghar Khaji", the senior adviser to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran on special political affairs, and his accompanying delegation on Monday.

In this meeting, Assad emphasized the depth of relations between Syria and Iran, as well as the strengthening of cooperation and coordination between the two countries in various fields.

On Monday, Khaji also met with Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad, his deputy Bassam al-Sabbagh and condemned Western countries for their stance on the issue of Syrian refugees.

He called for the implementation of the United Nations resolution regarding the immediate reconstruction of Syria and the provision of suitable grounds and facilities for the return of refugees.

While congratulating the successful holding of the Syrian National Assembly elections, Khaji hoped for the speedy progress in the process of solving Syria's political and security problems.

He also thanked Syria's president and a high-ranking delegation in the ceremony to pay tribute to Late President Ebrahim Raisi as well as a recent telephone conversation between Assad and Iran's president-elect Masoud Pezeshkian, saying the two countries have strategic and brotherly relations.
