The resolution was approved on Monday as the United States did not use its veto power to shield its ally at the United Nations.
Fourteen members of the 15-member UN Security Council voted in favor of the draft resolution and the US was the only member state to abstain.
The US had vetoed three earlier resolutions to establish a ceasefire in Gaza.
This draft resolution was put forward by 10 non-permanent members of the Security Council.
Writing on his official X account after the resolution was passed, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said, “the Security Council just approved a long-awaited resolution on Gaza, demanding an immediate ceasefire, and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.”
“This resolution must be implemented. Failure would be unforgivable.”
