The summit kicked off on Wednesday morning with the aim of finding ways to expand bilateral and multilateral cooperation on communications issues between ECO member countries, among other objectives.
The participating ministers are to discuss the future of digital technology in the region and efforts needed for more coordination in the field.
Iran’s Minister of Information and Communications Technology Issa Zarepour said last month that he had also invited some of his counterparts from non-ECO countries to attend the meeting to create an opportunity for more cooperation on communication issues.
Founded as the Regional Cooperation for Development (RCD) in 1964 by Iran, Pakistan, and Türkiye, the forum was renamed the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) in 1985. The organization currently has 10 members, namely Iran, Pakistan, Türkiye, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Its stated goal is to provide a platform to discuss ways to improve development and to promote trade and investment opportunities in the region.
