Tehran, IRNA – Production operations in Venezuela’s El Palito refinery which stopped about a year ago is expected to resume on Monday with financial and technical assistance provided by Iran and on the eve of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi's visit to the Latin American country.

The reactivation of El Palito refinery, located in the state of Carabobo, will be made with the cooperation and participation of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Reuters said in a report on Sunday.

“El Palito, the country's smallest refinery, is undergoing major repairs and expansion projects after a 100-million-euro deal signed with the state-owned Iranian National Company of Petroleum Refining and Distribution (NIORDC),” according to the report.

Raisi left Tehran early on Monday for a trip to three countries of Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Cuba.

Prior to his departure, Raisi described relations with "independent Latin American states" as strategic. .

The visit is the thirteenth foreign trip by the Iranian president since he took office in August 2021.
