Khorram Abad, IRNA – Pouring rains have caused the water behind Kamandan Dam in western Iranian Lorestan Province to rise, prompting local officials to evacuate nearby villages for fear of floods.

Mehdi Pazouki, the director of crisis management office of Lorestan Province, told IRNA on Wednesday that Iran Meteorological Organization had earlier issued a red alert over torrential rains in the area.

He said that the rains are very intensive, but no damage has been reported so far.

Torrential rains began in western Iran earlier today and are expected to continue until Thursday night.

The official said that the nomads have also been relocated in safer areas where the Red Crescent Society has set up temporary accommodation camps.
