Tehran, IRNA – Over two decades have passed since the establishment of the Guantanamo detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the center is still operational despite the fact that even Westerners consider the illegal torture center as a disgrace in the US’s history.

Following the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States, the Bush administration resorted to some measures to show that it will not spare any effort to hunt and bring the perpetrators of the attacks to justice.

Then US president George W. Bush set up Guantanamo prison on January 11, 2002. His successor Barack Obama signed into law the executive order of shutting down the notorious jail, but Congress refused to finance the closure, so the prison is still running.

Amnesty International’s Americas director urged US President Joe Biden to shut down the prison and order a probe into the detention center, warning, “Guantánamo remains an indelible stain on the United States' history.”

Erica Guevara Rojas, the director of the US at Amnesty International, issued a statement, saying, "It’s tragic that 21 years after the opening of an offshore detention facility specifically designed to evade the rule of law, the US government continues to detain 35 men at the Guantánamo Bay detention camp."

"Most have never even been charged with a crime. None has had a fair trial. Many of the detainees were tortured."

The US possesses 750 bases in 80 countries around the world. The CIA reached the conclusion that Guantanamo Bay in Cuba is the best place for torturing suspects of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

They chose Cuba to avoid international and American judicial supervision, so this detention center is one of the main examples of the violation of human rights by the United States under the guise of defending national security.
