According to the EFE news agency, the vice president announced via state-owned media outlets that the doses have been received, expressing gratitude to the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The consignment reached Nicaragua on June 21 in the afternoon (local time), when the first batch was handed over to the Latin American authorities in the presence of the Iranian Ambassador to Managua, Majid Salehi, and Minister of Health of Nicaragua Martha Reyes.
Following a memorandum of understanding between Iran and Nicaragua, the Iranian Shifa Pharmed Industrial Group was tasked to supply the Latin American country with coronavirus vaccines.
Nicaraguan officials hope that the doses can help them vaccinate more population in the Latin American country, where about 93 percent of Nicaraguans have got the first jab and 85 percent of the population have got two doses of coronavirus shots.
Nicaragua and Iran signed the memorandum of understanding on March 17, 2022, when managers of the Shifa Pharmed Industrial Group affiliated to the Executive Headquarters of Imam's Directive vowed to provide the country with the COVIran Barekat vaccine.
The signing ceremony was held in the presence of Nicaraguan Ambassador to Iran Isaac Lenin Bravo Jaen, as well as representatives from Iran’ Ministry of Health and Medical Education and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
At the event, Deputy Minister for International Affairs of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education Mohammad-Hossein Niknam noted that Nicaragua’s request for the vaccine as the first country ordering the COVIran Barekat indicates the depth of cooperation between the two countries.
Isaac Lenin Bravo Jaen said in the March ceremony that the Nicaraguan Government and people thank the move, which shows solidarity and friendship between the two nations.
Nicaragua’s Ministry of Health issued a license for using the vaccine following some tests; then, the vaccine is safe for usage in Nicaragua because authorities are sure that the Iranian company has observed safety measures, the minister noted.
The envoy also mentioned that he himself got the jabs and he has not experienced any side effects, so he reported the high performance of the vaccine to the Nicaraguan Government.
He further underlined that the cooperation between Iran and Nicaragua will help the Latin American country to contain the virus.
