Jaber Akbarpour told IRNA on Friday that following the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, Iran closed the Bazargan border crossing for passengers over one and a half years, while transit of commodities and transport of dual citizens were allowed during the same period.
Based on the new permissions, those who have vaccination cards and negative PCR tests can continue their travel from the border crossing, he noted.
Truck traffic has been resumed since June 2020, the official said, adding that the traffic increased 2.5 times in 2021. Some 131,178 trucks crossed the border crossing in the first half of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2021 to September 22, 2021).
The Bazargan Customs office is located in vicinity of Iran’s borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan Republic. The Islamic Republic of Iran has 130 kilometers ad 140 kilometers joint borders with the two neighboring states respectively.
The customs office was set up in 1926. It is the only international border crossing between Iran and Turkey, which is operating round the clock.
West Azerbaijan province has five official border crossings with Turkey, Iraq and Nakhichevan, including Bazargan in Maku county, Razi in Khoi county, Sarv in Urmia county, Sanam Bolaqi in Poldasht county and Tamarchin in Piranshahr county.
The Islamic Republic of Iran possesses 22 border crossings. One fourth out of the border crossings are in West Azarbaijan province. The Bazargan Customs is one of the three border crossings between Turkey and Iran.
