Tehran, May 2, IRNA -- UN envoy to Iran Gary Lewis said that unexploded mines left from previous wars are cause of terror due to killing thousands of civilians all over the world.

“Deadly weapons are concealed in many places, including houses, and this has terrified local populations,' Lewis said in his message on behalf of UN Secretary General on Tuesday.

He said that over the past 20 years, the UN and its partners had cleared numerous regions from war's unexploded mines.

Lewis pointed to educating thousands of men and women on how to deal with war ordnance and mines, and said that the job had contributed to empowering and protecting human societies.

Lewis appreciated all states active on the path of anti-mine campaign and affirmed that any peace without action against mine is an incomplete one.

He made the remarks in a forum on International Mine Awareness Day (April 4), attended by a number of ambassadors and military attaches of the foreign embassies in Tehran, as well as some Iranian officials.

Meanwhile, a photo exhibition on Mine Awareness and contribution to act against it opened in Tehran on Tuesday.
