Tehran, IRNA – A senior police commander has been killed by narcotics smugglers in southern Iranian province of Fars.

Second Brigadier General Kourosh Bazyar was killed during a patrol in the provincial capital of Shirza on Tuesday. 

Bazyar stopped a suspicious pickup truck but was hit by a second car which was escorting the truck.  

He was later pronounced dead in a hospital in Shiraz where medics failed to save him from his injuries suffered in the incident. 

Scores of Iranian police officers have been killed in recent years in clashes with narcotics smugglers in the country.
