Tehran, IRNA – The Commander of Iran's Headquarters for Fighting Narcotics says drug trafficking through Iran’s soil has decreased by 20% due to increased risks facing the smugglers operating at borders and inside the country.

“Due to an increased risk, we are witnessing a 20% decrease in the transit of narcotics through Iranian soil,” Eskandar Momeni said at a conference attended by the chiefs of the anti-narcotics police departments from across Iran on Monday.

According to Momeni, more than 70% of narcotics confiscations in Iran occur along the eastern borders and less than 30% occur deep inside the country.

This shows the effect of the work done by anti-narcotics police who have initiated the fight against narcotics from the zero point of the borders, he argued.

He also said that more than 70% of narcotics confiscations in the country are a result of intelligence operations.
