Tehran, IRNA – The match between Iran and Japan shattered records in Internet traffic during the round of 16 of the AFC Asian Games, says Amir Lajevardi, Iran’s Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Technology.

In a historic moment during the AFC Asian Cup, Iran’s national football team secured a 2-1 victory over Japan in the round of 16. Alireza Jahanbakhsh’s last-minute penalty sealed the win, propelling Iran to the semifinals for the second time since 2004.

The Internet Exchange Point (IXP) traffic reached unprecedented levels. For the first time, it hit approximately 5 Terabits Per Second (Tbps), demonstrating the surge in online activity during this high-stakes football clash. Furthermore, during the Iran-Syria football match, the combined domestic and international traffic skyrocketed, exceeding an astonishing 12.5 Tbps, Lajevardi said on Sunday.
