A Press Release published on Wednesday said that "The Government of Reconciliation and National Unity of Nicaragua welcomes South Africa's lawsuit before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) filed on December 29, 2023, against Israel for its violations of its obligations under the 1948 Convention for the Prevention and Punishment of Crimes of Genocide against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip."
The statement said that Nicaragua considers that the legal action against Israel before the ICJ is a concrete step in compliance with the legal obligations that each state party to the Genocide Convention has the right and duty to take and is also the first step towards accountability before the international community.
As a State Party to the Genocide Convention, Nicaragua expects Israel to immediately end its military assault against the Palestinian people, the statement added.
South Africa filed a case against Israel at the ICJ in November, accusing the regime of crimes of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza as part of a relentless bombardment which has killed more than 23,000 people and caused widespread destruction in the besieged enclave.
