Tehran, IRNA -- The head of Department of Environment of Iran has proposed joint activities between Regional Conference of Plenipotentiaries of the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME) and Kuwait Regional Convention for Co-operation on the Protection of the Marine Environment from Pollution.

Ali Salajegheh made the proposal in a meeting with Saudi Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture Abdulrahman Al-Fadli, IRNA reported on Saturday.

During the meeting which was held on the sidelines of the Ninth Conference of Environment Ministers in the Islamic World in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Salajegheh expressed concern over pollution created in the Persian Gulf due to presence of the oil tankers which come and go through this region.  

Salajegheh called for formation of such a convention in order to save aquatic plants and lives, the fish and water resources in the Persian Gulf.

Referring to Iran’s good related experiences, the official said the Islamic Republic welcomes proposal for formation of a working group to follow up the related issues.

As he underlined, the knowledge-based companies can help proceed the environmental works.

The Ninth Conference of Environment Ministers in the Islamic World organized by Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) is underway in Saudi city of Jeddah since October 19.
