Tehran, IRNA – Doctor Afshin Ostovar from Iran has won a prestigious regional award for his efforts to control non-communicable diseases like cancer.

Ostovar was announced as the 2022 recipient of The State of Kuwait Prize for the Control of Cancer, Cardiovascular Diseases and Diabetes in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, according to a Wednesday report by the Iranian health ministry. 

The report said a senior health ministry official had received the prize on behalf of Ostovar during a ceremony in Kuwait. 

It added that researchers from 22 countries had been shortlisted for the award which is directly funded by the Kuwaiti government. 

Ostovar is a professor at Tehran University of Medical Science (TUMS) and leads TUMS’s Endocrine & Metabolism Research Institute.
