Tehran, IRNA - Iranian Vice President for Science, Technology, and Knowledge-based Economy Ruhollah Dehghani Firouzabadi has left Tehran for Havana to participate in the 2023 summit of the Group of 77 + China.

Dehghani Firouzabadi is scheduled to take part in this year’s summit, which will be held on September 15-16.

The summit of the Group of 77 + China, themed “Current Development Challenges: Role of Science, Technology, and Innovation", will be attended by the top officials from developing states, as well as Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres.

According to the Vice Presidency for Science and Technology, Iranian and Cuban officials are scheduled to follow up on cooperation issues on the sidelines of the summit. They plan to set up a center for technological and scientific cooperation.

The Group of 77 was established by 77 countries in 1964 as the largest union of developing nations. The group officially initiated its activities following the end of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) meeting with a statement.

Now, it has 133 member states but still introduces itself as Group of 77 because of the historical and political significance of the inaugural meeting that led to its formation. It promotes collective economic prosperity as well as negotiations among the Global South states and technical collaborations among developing nations.
