Tehran, IRNA – Iran has imported its first shipment of sheep meat from Kenya, the Iranian ambassador to Kenya says.

Import of mean consignment was made following President Ebrahim Raisi's visit to Africa and signing a contract with Kenya, Jafar Barmaki said on Wednesday.

Barmaki highlighted that prior to President Raisi’s visit, Iran had no commercial cooperation in the food sector with Africa.

He further noted that 2,000 sheep are currently in quarantine in Narok, ready for slaughter, with all necessary protocols and tests having been observed.

In a collaborative effort, Iranian veterinarians have worked alongside their Kenyan counterparts to tag all the sheep.

An average of 100,000 tons of red meat has been imported over the last decade.
