Tehran, IRNA – EU Special Representative for the Persian Gulf region Luigi Di Maio has said that natural diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia will benefit the region.

Speaking in a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian on Sunday, Di Maio emphasized the role that can be played by the office of the United Nations Secretary-General in convening a first meeting of foreign ministers of the eight Persian Gulf littoral states.

Emphasizing Iran's important position in the region, the EU diplomat briefed Amirabdollahian on his first trip to some countries in the Persian Gulf.

Meanwhile, Amirabdollahian in the meeting elaborated on latest developments in relations between neighboring countries in the Persian Gulf region.

He also termed the current situation in the region as a new chapter that can pave the ground for more cooperation between the eight countries of the Persian Gulf region.

The top Iranian diplomat said Tehran's proposal for the formation of forum for dialogue and cooperation in the region, which is also supported by the regional countries, shows the will of the regional countries to engage in cooperation in various dimensions, including on important environmental issues.

He said holding the first meeting of the forum on the sidelines of the upcoming United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York at UN Secretary General's initiative as a step in line with maintaining greater convergence in the region.
