"The government is definitely pursuing this matter, but you can follow up details of this issue from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” Ahmad Vahidi said Wednesday when asked by a reporter about the detention of Mohammad Hossein Velayati, a photojournalist with the Tasnim News Agency.
Velayati was arrested on Saturday under unspecified circumstances by the Taliban at Kabul airport shortly before boarding a flight to Iran, following a 10-day lawful stay in Afghanistan.
Afghan authorities did not provide any information as to why he was arrested.
Meanwhile, Iman Shamsaei, the director general of Iran's domestic news agencies and press, also confirmed the arrest on Wednesday, and called on the ruling administration in Afghanistan to support and protect foreign journalists.
“Any news person traveling to a foreign country, whether individually or on behalf of the media, should be supported and protected,” Shamsaei said.
