Tehran, IRNA – Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has said that the southern Caucasus region is of paramount importance to Iran, and added that the Islamic Republic welcomes the convergence among the countries in this region.

He made the remarks during a meeting in Tehran on Monday with his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan.

“We believe that the order based on war has ended and the order based on peace has been established in the Caucasus region,” he said, adding that a durable peace requires a language of friendship and cooperation among the governments and nations.

The foreign minister said that he and his Armenian counterpart discussed ways to remove transit obstacles.

He noted that Iran and Armenia eye an annual $1 billion of trade exchanges and also have plans to increase the volume of trade to $3 billion.   

In the meantime, the Armenian foreign minister said that historical relations with Iran is of special importance to Armenia.

Mirzoyan said that Iran has always been a unique friend for Yerevan.

He added that the two foreign ministers discussed the implementation of the agreements already signed between the two neighboring countries on energy, technology and other areas.
