Tehran, IRNA – Guaranteed wheat purchase from domestic farmers in Iran has exceeded 6.02 million metric tons (mt) since the start of the harvest in April, Iran's Deputy Minister of Agriculture Jihad (MAJ) has said.

Saeid Raad said on Tuesday that the domestic purchase of wheat from local farmers has increased by 1.292 million mt (March 21-July 10) compared to the last year’s corresponding period, indicating a 27% year-on-year surge.

The government has paid the local farmers over 57% of the price of their products, he further noted.

Recently, MAJ's head of wheat farming Sohrab Sohrabi estimated that the country's wheat output will reach 12.5 to 13 million mt in the harvest period to July.
