Tehran, IRNA – Iran’s top human rights official says the United States has imposed sanctions, which are illegal, on nearly 25 countries, while describing the sanctions as the biggest crime against humanity.

Kazem Gharibabadi, who serves as Secretary-General of Iran's High Council for Human Rights, made the remarks on Sunday on the occasion of the week to review and reveal the American human rights records in Iran.

Gharibabadi said imposition of "cruel illegal unilateral sanctions" against the Iranian people is one of the United States’ crimes.

He added that the United States has imposed the most extensive and cruel sanctions against the Iranian nation in recent years.

The official said prominent lawyers believe that sanctions should be viewed as a type of war weapon and a hardware because of its impacts on the life of human beings.

Perhaps the use of weapons will result in killing a small number of people, the official said, adding that sanctions will not only lead to the killing of more people but also cause a lot of damage in various fields.
