Mostafa Chamran is one of the most well-known figures of contemporary Iran mainly due to the role he played as a commander during the 1980s war imposed on Iran by Iraq. Born in 1932, he graduated from UC Berkeley after performing undergraduate courses in the University of Tehran and in Texas A&M University. (IRNA archived photos published on June 21, 2023)

Chamran was a politician and a physician, who was also the defense minister in the first government after the Islamic Revolution of 1979 under then prime minister Mehdi Bazargan before serving as a lawmaker in the first Majlis (parliament) of Iran. 

He also founded the irregular warfare headquarters during the eight-year Iraqi imposed war against Iran (1980-88). The senior commander was martyred on June 21, 1981.
