Tehran, IRNA – President of Kenya, William Ruto, has called on the African nations to kickstart the de-dollarization process and use local currencies in bilateral trade among countries across the continent.

Ruto stressed the need for moving away from the US dollar in trade exchanges between Kenya and Djibouti and questioned the use of USD in the settlements between the two African countries, Iran's Fars news agency reported.

He said that the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has introduced a new mechanism enabling trade in local currencies among African countries.

Ruto added that his country fully support Afreximbank’s new payment system.

Purchases from the United States can still be settled in USD, he noted.
