Tehran, IRNA – Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has met with Asadollah Asadi, the former Iranian diplomat who returned home last month after five years of detention in Belgium.

The meeting took place at the Iranian Foreign Ministry building in the capital Tehran on Saturday.

The foreign minister held talks with Asadi two weeks after his arrival in Iran on May 26.

Asadi, who served as the third counselor at Iran's Embassy in Austria’s capital Vienna, was arrested by Belgian police in June 2018.

He was accused of plotting an attack against the anti-Iran Mujahedin-e Khalq (MKO) terrorist organization, a claim that has been strongly rejected by the former diplomat and Iranian authorities.

Iran had repeatedly condemned the violation of Asadi's diplomatic immunity and made every effort to secure his release in negotiations with Belgian authorities.
