Zahedan, IRNA - Police Chief in Iran's Sistan and Baluchestan province has said that over 1 metric ton (mt) of opium has been seized during an operation in the southeastern Iranian province.

In an interview with IRNA on Saturday, Brigadier General Doustali Jalilian said that his forces had identified and arrested seven members of an armed drug-trafficking gang who were trying to transfer a large shipment of opium from Sistan and Baluchestan to areas in central Iran.

During the operation, a total of 1,218 kg of opium were confiscated from the smugglers, Jalilian said.

He added that police had also seized 5 cars that were used by the smugglers for drug trafficking purposes.
