London, IRNA- Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister on Legal Affairs Reza Najafi has said that imposed unilateral sanctions are against international law and the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).

Najafi made the remarks at the Fifth Review Conference of the Chemical Weapons Convention underway in The Hague, the Netherlands on Monday.

As the biggest victim of chemical weapons in contemporary history, the Islamic Republic considers any sanctions against CWC independent members by some member states to be against international law and the Chemical Weapons Convention, Najafi said.

He added that sanctions have deprived Iranian chemical veterans of access to medicines and medical supplies.

Referring to the weapons of mass destruction of the Zionist regime, he described the Zionist regime as a big threat to peace and security in the Middle East region.

The official called on the international community to pile pressure on the regime in joining the Chemical Weapons Convention without any preconditions and delays.

Calling for the destruction of chemical weapons by the United States as the only member state to possess them within the deadline, he rejected any excuse for further delay in the destruction of the chemical weapons.

The Fifth Review Conference of the Chemical Weapons Convention is being held in The Hague from 15 to 19 May 2023, focusing on the roadmap and plans of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in the next five years.
