Tehran, IRNA – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani has said that the massive voter turnout in the 2023 presidential election in Turkiye was a victory for democracy.

In a Monday statement, Kanaani congratulated Turkish people, political leaders, and parties for their success in holding the presidential election a day earlier while wishing them the best of outcomes in the elections.  

He said the turnout in Sunday elections was a victory for popular democracy in the "Muslim, neighboring country". 

The presidential election in Turkey started on May 14, 2023, a day after candidates finished campaigning. Incumbent Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, and Sinan Oğan are competing to win the race.
