Tehran, IRNA - Police Chief in Iran's Sistan and Baluchestan province says that over 1 metric ton (mt) of opium have been seized during an operation in the southeastern province.

In an interview with IRNA on Saturday, Brigadier General Doustali Jalilian said that his forces had identified and arrested eight members of an armed drug-trafficking gang who were based in Zabol, Khash, Iranshahr, and Saravan counties and were trying to transfer a large shipment of opium from Sistan and Baluchestan to areas in central Iran.

During the operation, a total of 1.03 mt of opium were confiscated from the smugglers, Jalilian said.

He added that police had also seized 7 cars that were used by the smugglers for drug trafficking purposes.
