Fierce fighting erupted Saturday in Sudan’s capital between the Sudanese armed forces and the powerful paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), raising fears of a wider conflict in the North African country.
“Undoubtedly, the only way out of the emerging crisis is through Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue and an internal consensus about a national initiative," the Iranian foreign ministry spokesman added..
Saturday’s clashes came after months of heightened tensions between the military and the RSF, which derailed an agreement with political parties to restore Sudan's transition to democracy.
The sound of heavy gunfire and blasts rang out across densely populated areas in the capital, Khartoum, and the city of Omdurman, where both sides have amassed tens of thousands of troops since an October 2021 military coup.
